Abstract

At Nyantong Public Elementary School in Tasikmalaya City, a number of students in grades II and III still experience difficulties in basic reading, particularly in recognizing letters, arranging letters into words, and arranging words into simple sentences. This study aims to assess the extent of their basic literacy skills in elementary school as part of efforts to overcome illiteracy. The study was conducted using a quantitative descriptive approach, involving 36 students as participants. Data collection was carried out during three learning sessions every Monday and Thursday, and the results were analyzed to observe the students' literacy development. The results were quite encouraging: after three sessions, many students showed improvement from moderate to good or even very good in letter recognition, combining letters into words, and arranging words. Although there were still some students who did not achieve perfect results, overall, this learning method proved to be effective. In conclusion, planned reading learning activities can be very beneficial in improving students' basic literacy and can be an effective strategy in overcoming illiteracy at the elementary school level.
