Abstract

The PESONA ALIRAN MERAWU social innovation was initiated to respond to the high threat of ecological degradation caused by the sedimentation rate in the Serayu River Basin, as well as the structural socio-economic vulnerability of the Bawang Village community, with the primary objective of transforming these issues into economic independence and sustainable environmental conservation. This study adopts an exploratory qualitative approach through a case study method utilizing the Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA) analytical framework to comprehensively map the five pillars of the community's livelihood assets. The SLA mapping results indicate that although financial capital is at a highly vulnerable level, the community's social capital emerges as the strongest pillar. This massive communal strength has been strategically integrated into a circular economy design through a social innovation program that encompasses the pillars of critical land conservation, the processing of sediment waste and water hyacinth into organic fertilizer and feed pellets, and the enhancement of human resources technical capacity. This multidimensional empowerment intervention has proven highly effective in achieving its ultimate goal of transforming natural ecosystem burdens into productive resources capable of optimizing agricultural production costs, boosting food security, and simultaneously preserving the sustainability of the Mrica Reservoir.
