Abstract

This community service study discusses waste management in boarding houses in Gang Citra, Tasikmalaya. Indonesia's national waste problem is severe. For example, Tasikmalaya produces all kinds of mixed waste that is dumped into the Ciangir landfill, and the country ranks second globally in terms of waste entering the sea. Locally, boarding houses in Gang Citra produce mixed household waste without separation, which burdens the waste collection system and attracts pests. We implemented a two-week educational intervention in two boarding houses (A and B): installing colored trash bins and posters, as well as conducting door-to-door guidance. Monitoring showed a significant decrease in black trash bins (Boarding House A: –40% in week 1, –55% in week 2; Boarding House B: –25% and –50%, respectively) and a corresponding increase in transparent (recyclable) trash bins. Residents and managers responded positively, committing to continue sorting. Improved hygiene was observed (fewer rats/cockroaches). These results support the effectiveness of the intervention. Linking to behavioral change theory, we discuss how visual reminders and informal rules reinforce new habits, enabling the spread of this practice. In conclusion, our model effectively changed waste management behavior and can be replicated in similar boarding house communities.
